Lisicki captured Family Circle Cup title, beats Wozniacki

German 16th seed Sabine Lisicki won her first tour title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Danish fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday in the Family Circle Cup.

“I couldn’t believe that I won, because I didn’t use my match points,” Lisicki said.  “Then I finally won.

“I don’t know which match point it was – seventh, eighth – it felt like 30th.  But I was just so happy I won.”

Lisicki won US$188,000 and a crystal cup for her first tour victory.  She also becomes the first player to win the Family Circle Cup who has never won a tournament title previously. Ranked No. 63, she is expected to climb to No. 43 with the victory.

Playing together for the third time, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova the duo captured doubles title on Sunday with a tense match tie-break win over surprise finalists Liga Dekmeijere and Patty Schnyder, 67(5) 62 119.

Mattek-Sands and Petrova played their first two tournaments together in recent weeks at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and The MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Well Lisicki really is Germany’s new tennis hope. It can be suspected that with her way to play tennis, she’ll easily make it in the top 15 rankings by the end of the year. Let us wish her all the best and let us all hope that Sabine will stay free of injuries!
