WTA Top 10 – Performance Analysis : VERA ZVONAREVA

BOTTOM LINE – Bagel sets won: 16 (2 lost)

                                        Three-setters won: 19 (8 lost)

Another Russian enjoying a resurgence, Vera Zvonareva first hit the Top 10 in 2004 (finishing the year at No. 11), but fell out of the Top 40 the following year because of some well-chronicled on-court meltdowns and some lesser-chronicled injuries. The climb back was long and slow, but Zvonareva’s perseverance was rewarded with a career season in 2008 that included two titles, five other finals, and an Olympic bronze medal.

Zvonareva’s minor breakdown in her Doha final against Venus Williams showed that “The Crying Game” can still live up to her nickname from time to time, but she has proven herself to be a ferocious competitor this season. Zvonareva has taken more 6-0 sets than any other WTA player, and shown mental fortitude in winning nearly three-quarters of the three-set matches she’s played.

To-Do List:  Maintain momentum, outgrow the nickname
