BOTTOM LINE – Percentage of total 2008 rankings points earned at Wimbledon and Doha: 53%
That’s right, Venus Williams’ best two tournament performances this year were together worth more, in rankings points, than her other 12 tournaments combined. Though she scooped up two of the biggest prizes of the year by winning Wimbledon and the year-end championships in Doha, she strung together only two other winning streaks of more than three matches, hence her relatively low ranking.
It was much the same story for Venus last year, when her points from winning Wimbledon and reaching the U.S. Open semifinals accounted for 60 percent of her total ranking points. That indicates that the elder Williams sister, now 28, is still a dominant force when she plays best – but she only seems to reach that level a few weeks a year.
Still, Williams clearly knows how to pick her spots, having peaked to win Wimbledon three of the past four years and five times over all during her career.
