BOTTOM LINE – Titles won: 0
Svetlana Kuznetsova is the only player in the Top 10 who didn’t win a single this season. In fact, she has won just one event the past two years – and even that 2007 New Haven victory came when Agnes Szvay retired up a set in the final.
During this two-year stretch, Kuznetsova has played in 10 other finals and lost them all. But her most disappointing performance actually came in a semifinal – her flat, uninspiring 6-3, 6-2 loss to Dinara Safina at the French Open, an effort unbefitting of the 2004 U.S. Open champion. Kuznetsova’s season went downhill from there, with the exception of a brief period in the fall when she led Russia to victory in the Fed Cup final and reached two finals in Southeast Asia. But again, she came away from those events with the runner-up trophy.
Kuznetsova has attempted to reverse her losing trend, leaving her long-time training base at the Sanchez-Cascal Academy in Barcelona and parting ways with coach Stefan Ortega. In 2009, she will be based in Moscow and working with former Russian player Olga Morozova.
